Pescador Hat

A photo of a crochet ribbed hat in a vibrant red

For Christmas I received the gift of a crochet hat kit. It’s from This Is Knit, a lovely yarn shop in Powerscourt town centre in Dublin’s city centre. The kit consists of the printed pattern plus two balls of Rico’s aran weight essentials soft merino in a bright cheery red. I recently got a new red bag and coat so wanted to make a red hat to go with them.

The pattern is the Pescador Beanie from Nomad Stitches. I have Nomad Stitches Colourful Crochet Knitwear and it’s a lovely book.

The pattern was easy to follow but I’d recommend marking the first stitch of the up row as it can be easy to miss on the down row. I missed it and ended up with a slanted piece of work so I ripped it out and marked the stitch which solved the problem.

I hadn’t used this yarn before but it’s lovely, not splitty and it’s very squishy to work with. The pattern uses a new to me slip stitch that gives a gorgeous texture similar to fisherman’s rib or brioche in knitting. The crochet short rows cleverly creates the decreases at the crown of the hat. I added a few more repeats than the pattern called for but I think my tension was a little tight. I had plenty yarn to finish the project. I’m pleased with how it turned out, sometimes simple patterns are best.

Here’s a link to the kit.
