Tofino Top and June Shorts

I continued using up my garment fabric and I was wondering what to do with a long length of printed cotton. Last year I made a pair of shorts from this fabric using the Arden pants pattern from Helen’s closet. The shorts are nice and comfy. However to me this fabric is a bit pajamas and I couldn’t imagine wearing a whole dress or top using it.

So the obvious choice was to continue the pajamas thought use it to make a fancy pair of pajamas. I checked out a few patterns and decided I’d use a normal shirt and bottoms pattern so that the pjs would be a wearable toile. I’d get to test out the patterns and the fit and if they didn’t quite work it would be fine. I picked the Tofino top from Helens closet, it’s a boxy shirt with a collar. For the shorts I used the June pants also from Helens closet. These are a simple wide leg trouser with an elastic waist.

I made the cropped view of the Tofino top and added 5cm in length because even though I am quite short the cropped view would have been very short on me. So if you make this pattern bear that in mind and check the length. The shorts came together really quickly. I liked the way the pockets were done and will use this method in future for this style of pocket. I added a drawstring because that looks nice in a pajamas. The shorts fit well and are comfortable. The front and back rise both seem like a good fit for me. Sometimes I have trouble with that in trouser patterns because I’m short. I will definitely make more of these.

The Tofino top was a really fun make. I really like the yoke and burrito method of constructing shirts. It’s fun to do and certainly gives you something to puzzle out. I’ve gotten used to adding buttons so even that didn’t slow me down that much. It’s turned out really nicely and it’s definitely a fancier pair of pajamas than I usually have. I like the boxy fit and think this style of shirt would be great for wearing open over tops in the summer.
